School PR DIY: Building a Right-Sized Communications Team
As school PR pros, we wear too many hats. But how many is too many, and how do you know when it’s time to bring someone else in to wear a few of those hats? Successful school PR teams/programs should be scaled based on what they do and the services they provide, not by the number of students in a district. In this interactive session, learn how to recognize when growing pains mean that it’s actually time to grow and get some tips on how to bring in and scale up the human capital on your communications team.
Speaker(s): Chris Tennill, APR, Chief Communications Officer

LEADERSHIP -- PR/communication leadership (strategic counseling, reputation management, relationship building, organizational dynamics, mentoring/guidance, professional development, etc.)

The Uncivil Debate: Communication in an Era of Outrage
Public schools are navigating through a perfect storm of controversies, catastrophes and critical situations: pandemic pandemonium, CRT, natural disasters, mean-spirited politics, DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion), declining enrollment, workforce turnover, sex abuse, immigration, and parental choice. Public schools are the battleground for an increasingly uncivil debate as these issues collide. In this session, a veteran communicator will share his views about where we are and where we’re headed when it comes to public engagement in education. He will also lead a collaborative discussion about practices, pitfalls and possibilities for dealing with the negativity virus in our schools.

The FAPE Formula: It’s Not Math, It’s a Holding Statement!
The county prosecutor just contacted your district to inform you that a staff member is being investigated for selling drugs to students. Although the situation has not hit the news yet, it is just a matter of time. What should you do? What systems and resources does your district/service agency have in place to proactively manage the situation? Using the RPIE process, participants will evaluate a variety of crisis scenarios and develop holding statements using the FAPE formula. Leave with a number of holding statement samples and other crisis resources. Math skills are not necessary to be successful!

Adapting Private-Sector Marketing Ideas to Public Education
What is marketing? What is a brand? Research shows that industry best practices that drive results in the private-sector marketing world are not being applied in K-12 education. In public education, school districts often don't have the time, the tools or resources to improve their marketing efforts. Identify the disconnects and learn how schools can fill those gaps.

Networking Event With Boxed Lunches (additional fee)
Networking lunches are an opportunity to connect with other communicators who have similar professional or personal interests. First grab your boxed lunch, and then grab a seat at a table of your choice. Tables will be organized by affinity groups, with professional interests featured on Monday and personal interests featured on Tuesday. (Help identify the affinity groups by attending your Regional Colleague Connections meeting on Sunday afternoon!) During the networking lunches, you’ll meet national colleagues who share your interests and make new friends to hang out with during the Seminar and to call for support throughout the year. Spend the full lunch break at one table or try several different tables: It’s up to you! As an added bonus, less time traveling to an off-site location for lunch will mean less chance you miss the start of afternoon sessions.
Boxed lunches are available for purchase for an additional registration fee of $22/boxed lunch (includes sandwich, chips, drink). Purchase them in advance when you register, add them to your registration in the online Attendee Service Center, or purchase them in Chicago at the Seminar registration check-in desk on Sunday, July 17. Making the Brand: How To Develop Your District’s Brand
Your brand isn’t what "you" say it is. It’s what "they" say it is. The word branding gets thrown around a lot in the communications world, but ask someone to define it, and you’d be hard-pressed to get a single definition. Learn what branding truly is, what value it provides and why it should matter to school communicators trying to develop an identity for their school districts.

Racial Justice Starts with You: Taking the Next Step in Your Journey
Books, movies, podcasts and articles about race can help us better understand our country’s history, but learning leads to new questions: How do I use my voice sensitively and appropriately? What can I do that will matter? What are my motives on this journey? How do I speak the truth without shutting down conversation? Change won’t happen without personal reflection, and the demands of our job leave little time for that. This is a reflective writing workshop designed to give you the space to think about where you are on your own journey and where you want to go next.

Ditching Deficits to Reclaim the Narrative
Mark Twain once said, "Out of our public schools grows the greatness of a nation." The national conversation around public schools does not live up to this lofty notion. Instead, it too often focuses on deficits, perceived inadequacies and paints a broken system. Schools are the heartbeat of our communities, and to help others see this, we must change our communications style. Learn why deficit-based communications are ineffective and how to re-craft narratives for your district to present asset-based models.

Showing the Value of Your School PR Program 2.0: Surviving COVID-19
One of the toughest tasks school public relations professionals face is proving the value of their work. But COVID-19 has also led to some valuable new organizational dynamics. Some PR pros say they’ve forged stronger relationships with other departments, and others say they’ve gained a seat at the table in strategic decision making. Research overwhelmingly shows that school PR is worth many times its investment, but as practitioners, we often overlook promoting our worth. Learn why and how to promote your value.

Our Two Cents: Flyers and Compensation Are Not Enough
The lack of substitutes is an issue, and it’s definitely keeping superintendents and principals up at night. A nice flyer and raising substitute pay, while helpful, is not enough to meet the demand. A focus on community engagement and relationships is critical when building a substitute pipeline. As communicators, our job is to connect stories to the community to build awareness, pride and eventually a personnel pipeline. Learn how to lead your team through analysis of your district and utilize communications to enhance community engagement.
