Proquest Day
One of the highlights of the annual IAJGS conferences has been having ProQuest databases available in the Resource Room for one long day! This year, we’re getting a bonus day on top of that!
It is best to bring a USB drive with you to make copies of any item that you may find of value. The links to the ProQuest databases will be only on the Resource Room computers; the links cannot be used on your personal computers. No exceptions!

Wednesday Access
IAJGS is privileged to have the entire collection of historical newspapers, regional newspapers, Canadian newspapers, international newspapers, and American Jewish newspapers at our conferences. The Resource Room will be open on Wednesday, July 31, from 9 am to 9 pm. There will be 26 computers in the room. Sign-up sheets will be available at the Resource Room desk on ProQuest Day (no earlier sign-ups are permitted). If there are people waiting to use a computer, then people will be limited to 30 minutes at the computer. ProQuest historical newspapers are available only in libraries—both public and university. Many public libraries may have access to only one or two of the historical newspapers; we will have ProQuest’s entire collection of historical newspapers.
Thursday Access
As a special treat, ProQuest is also letting us have the entire collection on Thursday, August 1. The Resource Room will be open on Thursday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Sign-up sheets will also be required if there are people waiting to use the computers (that will be true for each day that the Resource Room is open). Again, sign-ups will not be permitted on prior days, and time will be limited to 30 minutes if there are people waiting for the computers.
ProQuest Lectures
We are also privileged to have Bill Forsyth from ProQuest available on Wednesday, July 31, to present an overview on how best to research on the newspapers. He will speak in the Resource Room three times: 10:30 am, 1:30 pm, and 5:30 pm. As we are limited to 26 computers, that means you will have to sign up to attend. The sign-up sheets will be in the Resource Room the morning of July 31, not before. You may sign-up for only one time slot, and each person has to sign up individually. If after 30 minutes you must relinquish the computer, then you have to sign up again. Double periods will not be allowed unless there is no one else waiting.
USC Shoah Foundation Visual History Archive
IAJGS is also privileged to be the first conference to offer access to the digitized USC Shoah Foundation Visual History Archive.
The Visual History Archive (VHA) is still in its early stages, as creating fully searchable transcriptions of the 55,000 video interviews will take many years to complete. The VHA contains over 13 years of continuous video. The Holocaust interviews were taped during 1988—2015. Currently, there are about 1,900 transcriptions available via the abbreviated VHA Online, USC Shoah Foundation’s YouTube Channel, and iWitness. The ones available for the conference are predominately from Germany. The VHA streams the USC Shoah Foundation proprietary platform; it is not on the ProQuest platform. While there are 40 languages represented in VHA, the platform is in English. Testimonies and transcripts are delivered in the language spoken during the interview. All indexing is done in English.
