General Session & Lunch - State of the movement
Join us for engaging conversations about the state of the movement. President & CEO Kitty Block sits down with Hilary Hager, Vice President of Outreach, Engagement and Training for HSUS to review policy priorities and discuss some of the tough fights for animals in 2022. Then, Carrie Allan, Senior Vice President of Communications for HSUS hosts a discussion with Carole and Howard Baskin. The Baskin's have recently become household names due to their role in Netflix’s Tiger King series, but Carole and Howard were well-known animal advocates helping to protect big cats in captivity long before the series. From running their Big Cat Rescue sanctuary to lobbying for legislation to end some of the cruelest practices facing captive wildlife, the Baskin's have worked tirelessly to raise public awareness about problems with cub petting, animals in entertainment, and the exotic animal trade.
Speaker(s): Kitty Block, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International Carole Baskin, Founder & CEO, Big Cat Rescue Howard Baskin, Advisory Board Chairman, Big Cat Rescue

General Session & Lunch: Climate justice is animal advocacy: Finding our new voice
In order to take greater strides towards a more humane world for all animals, we must address the vital role that food systems play in both climate change and animal welfare issues. In our Sunday lunch plenary, climate justice activist Lana Weidgenant will examine the intersectionality of animal welfare, climate change, and food systems and discuss how sustainability and compassion can bring about positive change for all. She will also address how we can empower youth to take action and continue to drive the movement. Then, Jonathan Lovvorn, Senior Vice President & Chief Counsel for HSUS with Ralph Henry, Senior Director, Litigation, Animal Protection Law will provide updates on a pivotal Supreme Court case that could erase one of the animal welfare industry’s greatest victories in recent memory—California Proposition 12. Prop 12 is a humane and public health law that ensures that eggs, pork, and veal sold in California come from facilities where animals are not confined in tiny cages where they can’t even turn around. In its challenge to this law, the pork industry is fighting to radically curtail state and local authority to confront factory farms and other abusive industry practices and presents a collective threat to social justice movements nationwide. Speaker(s): Lana Weidgenart, Climate Justice Activist and Campaigns and Policy Manager, ProVeg International Jonathan Lovvorn, Senior Vice President and Chief Counsel, Animal Protection Law, HSUS, The Humane Society of the United States Ralph Henry, Senior Director, Litigation, Animal Protection Law, HSUS, The Humane Society of the United States
