General Session & Lunch - State of the movement
Join us for engaging conversations about the state of the movement. President & CEO Kitty Block sits down with Hilary Hager, Vice President of Outreach, Engagement and Training for HSUS to review policy priorities and discuss some of the tough fights for animals in 2022. Then, Carrie Allan, Senior Vice President of Communications for HSUS hosts a discussion with Carole and Howard Baskin. The Baskin's have recently become household names due to their role in Netflix’s Tiger King series, but Carole and Howard were well-known animal advocates helping to protect big cats in captivity long before the series. From running their Big Cat Rescue sanctuary to lobbying for legislation to end some of the cruelest practices facing captive wildlife, the Baskin's have worked tirelessly to raise public awareness about problems with cub petting, animals in entertainment, and the exotic animal trade.

General Session & Lunch: Climate justice is animal advocacy: Finding our new voice
In order to take greater strides towards a more humane world for all animals, we must address the vital role that food systems play in both climate change and animal welfare issues. In our Sunday lunch plenary, climate justice activist Lana Weidgenant will examine the intersectionality of animal welfare, climate change, and food systems and discuss how sustainability and compassion can bring about positive change for all. She will also address how we can empower youth to take action and continue to drive the movement. Then, Jonathan Lovvorn, Senior Vice President & Chief Counsel for HSUS with Ralph Henry, Senior Director, Litigation, Animal Protection Law will provide updates on a pivotal Supreme Court case that could erase one of the animal welfare industry’s greatest victories in recent memory—California Proposition 12. Prop 12 is a humane and public health law that ensures that eggs, pork, and veal sold in California come from facilities where animals are not confined in tiny cages where they can’t even turn around. In its challenge to this law, the pork industry is fighting to radically curtail state and local authority to confront factory farms and other abusive industry practices and presents a collective threat to social justice movements nationwide. Speaker(s): Lana Weidgenart, Climate Justice Activist and Campaigns and Policy Manager, ProVeg International Jonathan Lovvorn, Senior Vice President and Chief Counsel, Animal Protection Law, HSUS, The Humane Society of the United States Ralph Henry, Senior Director, Litigation, Animal Protection Law, HSUS, The Humane Society of the United States

Private screening of The Conservation Game + Q&A with Filmmaker
Join us for popcorn, refreshments and a private screening of the THE CONSERVATION GAME, a documentary film set against the backdrop of a heated national debate on captive big cats in America, THE CONSERVATION GAME, a part of TAFA's film festival sponsored by Big Cat Rescue, follows the story of Tim Harrison, a retired cop who makes a bombshell discovery while undercover at an exotic animal auction. He starts to suspect that America’s top television celebrity conservationists may be secretly connected to the exotic pet trade. What follows is a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, filled with lies, deception, and coverups. As his investigation leads deeper into the secret world of the big cat trade, Tim and his team take their fight to the halls of Congress, pressing lawmakers to pass federal legislation that would end the private breeding and exploitation of these endangered and majestic animals. But when opposition comes from an unexpected source, Tim is forced to face the demons of his own past, while wrestling with the consequences of exposing his childhood hero. After the film, Michael Webber, the filmmaker/producer/director will moderate a Q&A session with Tim Harrison and Carole Baskin. Animals and the climate crisis
Global protests and a flurry of scientific reports have highlighted the existential threat climate change poses to both people and animals, including the predicted loss of one million species. But how do these dire statistics translate into on the ground suffering of animals and affect the ongoing work of the animal protection community? This talk will explore how climate change is affecting efforts to protect wildlife, companion animals, captive research and display animals, farm animals, animals in disasters, and other animals; highlight the unique role farm animals play as both a cause and victims of climate change; suggest concrete steps to confront and mitigate this rapidly emerging global humane crisis, and explore how different social movements can work together to protect animals, people, and the planet. From dogs to frogs, and everything in between: Creating a more humane world
Humane Society International (HSI) works around the globe to rescue and protect animals in need, improve farm animal welfare, protect wildlife and confront cruelty to animals. In this session, we will share unique HSI programs and campaigns that are currently underway to help companion animals – from ending the dog meat trade in Asia and training veterinarians in Latin America, to operating high-volume, high-quality spay-neuter projects in India, which reach tens of thousands of animals every year. On the dog meat trade, we will provide an exciting update on recent successes to end dog meat farming in South Korea once and for all. We will also share our efforts to end the trade of wildlife and exotic pets including glass frogs, the shark fin trade and explore the connection between wildlife trade and pandemics. You will also learn about our human-wildlife coexistence work. And finally, we'll describe our campaign to end trophy hunting, including recent successes that are helping reach a tipping point in ending this archaic and cruel practice. Find out how animal advocates and organizations can join our efforts to create a more humane world. Coexisting with wildlife in communities around the world
Each year, millions of wild animals are killed globally in order to address real or perceived human-wildlife conflicts. Traditional approaches to resolving conflicts and managing wildlife have relied on institutionalized frameworks that prioritize lethal methods, including firearms, bow, trap and kill methods, toxicants, and drowning among other methods. As a result, wild animals, including elephants, lions, raccoons, coyotes, fox, deer, bears, and geese unnecessarily suffer and are killed every year. Changing the way managing authorities address conflicts is important to reduce unnecessary killing and the suffering wild animals experience. In South Africa, wild animals are often portrayed as “problem animals”, framed in the context of human-wildlife conflict, so they can be lethally controlled creating an avenue for trophy hunting or culling. Wildlife conflicts exist, but there are a suite of non-lethal mitigation approaches to manage conflict and methods of controlling populations. We will discuss our work on these issues and the resources that you can utilize to help transform the way communities and agencies manage and coexist with wildlife.

Win for animals! Passing local ordinances and resolutions
Getting laws adopted for animals at the local level is a powerful way to win protections animals desperately need. Plus, it’s significantly easier than getting state and federal laws adopted. Why? Because your local elected officials are your neighbors, and because local governments (city/town councils and county governments) are far more nimble and often far more innovative than state and federal bodies. And, bonus: A well-crafted ordinance such as a ban on the sale of puppy mill dogs in local pet stores or a ban on the use of wild animals in circus acts in your town supports efforts to enact a statewide law. In this session you'll learn how to determine which local law has the best chance of being adopted in your community, the nuts and bolts of how to pass it and how you can be the leader your community has been waiting for. CAROLE BASKIN'S CAGE FIGHT Episode 101 Digging Up Joe's Dirt was released in 2021 and proved that Carole Baskin isn't distracted by the lies spread by her enemies. With the G.W. Zoo in her control, she investigates what Joe Exotic left behind and focuses on her next targets. In January 2020, Joe Exotic (AKA Joseph Maldonado-Passage), who ran the infamous G.W. Zoo out of Wynnewood, OK, was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison after being convicted of a murder-for-hire plot to kill Baskin. At the time, Jeff Lowe took over the G.W. Zoo until a federal judge awarded it to Baskin and her Big Cat Rescue in June 2020. With the property firmly in her control, and with the help of homicide detective Griff Garrison, CAROLE BASKIN’S CAGE FIGHT documents Baskin and her team as they investigate the property for any evidence of animal abuse and trafficking Joe Exotic or Jeff Lowe left behind, revealing many shocking moments along the way.

Film festival: Tiger Mafia
The 2016 documentary THE TIGER MAFIA is from filmmaker Karl Ammann who uncovers their illegal breeding in secret South East Asian tiger farms. His nine-year investigation exposes how body parts are harvested from both live and butchered tigers, and then traded for sale in China's underground pharmaceutical and jewelry industries. The initial 200 hours of footage shot for this documentary came together over a ten year period and a dozen trips to SE Asia and several to South Africa. Most of the filming was following up new leads from earlier visits and interactions with players on the ground. The approach was always event driven and there was never a script in place when going back. It was about documenting the realities on the ground, filming events as they happened in real time involving real situations.

Released in 2014, The Hidden Tiger is about your neighbor's backyard tiger and the role that the US played in the acceleration of its extinction. Extinction. Faced with ever shrinking habitat, rampant poaching, and the distinctly human desire to possess creatures of such mythical beauty, wild tiger numbers have dwindled by 95% within this past century. Film and television has made it easy for us all to fall in love with the majestic tiger, but their full story has remained hidden. This investigative documentary shows the other side: black markets trading in tiger parts, criminal abusers using tigers for extraordinary profit, cubs being ripped from their mothers for a short life of tourist photo ops, slaughtered tigers piled by the dozens, and the horrific truth that the United States plays a role in the threatened extinction of the beloved tiger.
