Successfully Mastering Difficult Conversations
Learning objective: Examine methods to approach difficult conversations with empathy, curiosity, and a commitment to collaborative problem-solving.
Have you ever faced what you consider to be a difficult conversation with a colleague? In the workplace, there are times when it is necessary to give critical feedback, asking for more money, time, or resources, or confronting a colleague. Your ability to communicate effectively is crucial to navigating difficult conversations successfully. In every conversation, there are costs to conversations that are not well managed such as stress, poor decision making and low morale. On the flip side, there can also be true gains by resolving issues without blame, upset and misunderstanding. Since ignoring disagreements doesn’t make them go away, being able to deal with difficult conversations effectively is an essential skill in maintaining good relationships and succeeding in life. We want to help remove the fear factor from difficult conversations by sharing tools to help turn that tough talk into a constructive dialogue to keep your relationships intact and your career on track. Avoiding potentially difficult conversations can be just as damaging as handling them poorly, especially if it means not voicing a concern or giving feedback. Feedback is essential for learning and opens the possibility for course correction. A difficult conversation can raise awareness of the need to change and prompt improvements which otherwise were unlikely. Mastering these conversations can open new avenues for freedom, connection and better productivity. At the end of this seminar, attendees will: 1. Examine common faults we produce when having a difficult conversation and how to avoid them. 2. Explore strategies for conducting difficult conversations, directly and professionally. 3. Techniques on building a good opening of a difficult conversation more effectively. 4. Develop guidelines to prevent defensiveness when you are provoked. 5. Discuss strategies for focusing on challenges and resolutions instead of blaming others. Assessed ECG SES Standards: 1.3 (Flexibility); 1.4 (Resilience); 2.3 (Developing Others); 2.4 (Team Building); 3.1 (Accountability); 4.2 (Human Capital Management); 6.1 (Interpersonal Skills); 6.2 (Oral Communication); 6.3 (Integrity/Honesty); 6.5 (Continual Learning) Speaker(s): Speaker: Todd Frech, Sr. Implementation Manager, Adaptive Biotechnologies, Inc.

In contemporary workplaces, the traditional dynamics of leadership are being challenged as women ascend to positions of authority. However, this transition is not without its hurdles. Historically, leadership roles have been predominantly occupied by men, creating ingrained expectations and biases. As women assume leadership positions, they often face resistance from male colleagues who may harbor unconscious biases or feel threatened by a shift in power dynamics. Through fostering a culture of respect, equality, and open communication, organizations can create pathways for women to lead effectively and for men to support their leadership without succumbing to resistance. Our panel will create a deeper understanding of the challenges women face when leading men in the workforce and practical strategies for overcoming resistance. By the end of the seminar, attendees will: 1. Examine the signs of resistance to develop effective strategies to address it. 2. Inclusive Intelligence: The Imperative of Diversity in AI
Learning objective: Explore how to address biases and discrimination embedded in AI systems that ensure responsible and ethical AI development and deployment.
In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly central to decision-making processes across industries, the imperative of diversity in AI development and deployment cannot be overstated. As AI algorithms rely heavily on data, they inherently reflect the biases and disparities prevalent in the datasets they are trained on. This issue underscores the importance of diversity not only in the workforce designing and deploying AI but also in the datasets used to train these systems. Without diverse representation and inclusive practices, AI technologies risk amplifying societal biases and perpetuating discrimination. This seminar delves into the fundamental necessity of diversity in AI, addressing the inherent biases and discrimination embedded in our societal fabric that AI systems risk perpetuating. By embracing diversity in AI development and governance, organizations can promote fairness, equity, and accountability in AI technologies, ultimately advancing towards a more just and inclusive future. Together, we can pave the way for AI technologies that reflect the diversity of our society and contribute positively to social progress and equality. By the end of the seminar, attendees will: 1. Discuss the ethical implications of biased AI. 2. Examine strategies for mitigating algorithmic discrimination. 3. Explore the role of diversity and inclusion in AI development teams. Balancing Act: Achieving Work-Life Harmony in the Remote Work Era
Learning objective: Explore techniques for cultivating a supportive environment conducive to work-life integration.
Achieving a harmonious work-life balance has become increasingly vital in today's fast-paced world, where the demands of work often spill over into personal time. Creating this balance is not just about dividing time between professional and personal pursuits; it's about integrating them in a way that fosters well-being, satisfaction, and overall fulfillment. Here are some strategies to help you achieve a balanced life: It's essential to establish boundaries. Define clear lines between work and personal time, whether you're in an office or working remotely. Another crucial aspect of achieving work-life balance is effective time management. Prioritize tasks based on their importance and deadlines and allocate time blocks for specific activities. Furthermore, don't underestimate the importance of self-care. Make time for activities that nourish your body, mind, and soul. Whether it's exercise, meditation, reading, or simply taking a leisurely stroll, prioritize activities that recharge your batteries and promote overall well-being. Remember that taking care of yourself is not selfish; it's essential for your health and productivity in both your professional and personal life. In conclusion, achieving work-life balance requires intentional effort and a commitment to prioritizing both professional and personal well-being. By setting boundaries, managing your time effectively, practicing self-care, and fostering open communication, you can create a balanced life that allows you to thrive both at work and at home. By the end of the seminar, attendees will: 1. Explore techniques for structuring your day, setting priorities, and establishing boundaries to enhance productivity and well-being. 2. Examine practical tips for designing an ergonomic workspace, minimizing distractions, and maximizing focus in a remote work environment. 3. Generational Work Styles in the Workforce: A New Communication Style
Learning objective: Explore techniques to adopt a flexible and inclusive communication style that accommodates the needs and expectations of each generation.
The modern workplace is a dynamic mosaic, woven together by the diverse threads of different generations. Each generation brings with it a unique set of values, experiences, and communication preferences, shaping the way we interact and collaborate within organizations. As the workforce continues to evolve, there emerges a compelling need to adapt communication styles to accommodate the diverse perspectives and expectations of each generation. In response to these diverse generational preferences, organizations must adopt a flexible and inclusive communication style that accommodates the needs and expectations of each generation. This entails embracing a multi-channel approach to communication, leveraging technology to facilitate seamless collaboration, and fostering a culture of openness, respect, and empathy across all levels of the organization. By embracing the rich diversity of generational work styles and adapting communication strategies accordingly, organizations can foster a more inclusive, collaborative, and productive workplace culture. This not only enhances employee engagement and satisfaction but also drives innovation, creativity, and success in an increasingly interconnected and dynamic business environment. By the end of the seminar, attendees will: 1. Explore the unique characteristics, values, and work styles of baby boomers, Generation X, millennials, and Gen Z. 2. Examine strategies for fostering open dialogue, active listening, and mutual respect across generations. 3. Discuss methods to harness digital tools and platforms that facilitate communication, collaboration, and knowledge sharing. 4. Delve into techniques for managing generational conflicts and leveraging diversity to drive innovation and creativity. 5. Converse about diversity, equity, and inclusion that can create a supportive environment where all generations can thrive.
