ChatHBCU: Opportunities in Artificial Intelligence
On October 30, 2023, the Biden Administration issued an Executive Order “to ensure that America leads the way in seizing the promise and managing the risks of artificial intelligence (AI). The Executive Order establishes new standards for AI safety and security, protects Americans’ privacy, advances equity and civil rights, stands up for consumers and workers, promotes innovation and competition, advances American leadership around the world, and more.” With the onset of Generative AI, the potential global market of $16 trillion by 2020, and its projected impacts on the US gross domestic product (GDP), the HBCU research ecosystem is poised to reap the benefits of this new technology wave which will be transformative to our communities. This seminar panel will discuss the current AI research efforts in our nation’s HBCUs, minority business enterprises and the opportunities for HBCUs to be a leading voice on the promises and perils of AI for our communities and the nation.

HBCU & PWI Collaborations: Equal Partnerships Leading to Extraordinary Outcomes!
For the United States to maintain its global leadership position, we must preserve a vibrant, future-oriented research ecosystem along with a well-developed STEM workforce pipeline. This task will require a broad, diverse pool of highly capable, talented researchers and employees in all areas, especially in STEM. To achieve this goal, broadening the participation of students from underrepresented groups in national research and STEM is necessary, which will require key partnerships. Mutually beneficial and authentic partnerships between Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly White institutions (PWIs) provides a unique opportunity to implement this goal. Panelists will shed light on how PWIs can benefit from recognizing and leveraging the strengths of HBCUs. These benefits include $14.8 billion in annual economic impact from HBCUs as well as graduating in STEM at least 25% undergraduates, including 46% of women and 30% of black doctoral degrees from these institutions. Panelists will also discuss key points that make these aspirations possible while providing examples and exploring features that are essential for their success. This session will include panelists from higher education and governmental entities with experience in developing successful research partnerships between PWIs and HBCUs. They will discuss personal and career examples of successful collaborations, factors that are essential to consider in developing these relationships, and funding opportunities for a diverse 21st century workforce. HBCUs Leading the 4th Industrial Revolution
According to the World Economic Forum, “the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) represents a fundamental change in the way we live, work, and relate to one another. It is a new chapter in human development, enabled by extraordinary technological advances commensurate with those of the first, second and third industrial revolutions. These advances are merging the physical, digital, and biological worlds in ways that create both huge promises and potential peril. The speed, breadth and depth of this revolution is forcing us to rethink how countries develop, how organizations create value and even what it means to be human.”. However, unlike previous industrial revolutions, the 4th Industrial Revolution has the promise to create more equity and opportunity for all people, especially people of color. HBCUs and their innovative research ecosystems will be at the forefront of this emerging, lightning-fast revolution. The panelists for this seminar with describe the attributes of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and how HBCUs can prepare their students for the transformational changes it will have on the communities they serve.

HBCUs: Creating Diverse, Domestic STEM Talent for America
According to recent statistics presented by the National Science Board, there are over 600,000 cybersecurity jobs to be filled, and over 3 million jobs to be filled in the emerging area of artificial intelligence. Finally, many of these jobs are with federal and local agencies that require these jobs to be filled by US citizens, particularly those jobs that are in the defense sector. This is where HBCUs ‘are a national security asset’, as a larger proportion of their students are eligible for these jobs. This seminar will speak to the opportunities for jobs from electricians to electrical engineers, from plumbers to PhDs, and how can HBCUs capitalize on providing the ‘Missing Millions’, to the growing US demand for diverse, domestic, STEM talent.

Conflict Resolution for Managers and Supervisors
Learning objective: Examine methods for addressing conflict effectively in the workplace Unresolved conflict can affect your team and its productivity. Learning how to resolve conflict at work while preserving a positive environment for your employees is a win for everyone. While you might be tempted to avoid workplace drama and let employees work things out on their own, this kind of hands-off approach can backfire. That is why managers need to know when and how to step in, to address situations before they get out-of-hand. To give employees a positive, conflict-free working environment, you need expertise in reading people, staying objective and diplomatically addressing the root of the problem. This session will give you the tools you need to address the issue, hear both sides, and find a working solution for everyone. At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

New Leadership Behaviors for Gaining Employee Trust
Learning Objective: Examine traits that build a culture of trust and belonging There are various theories on what makes your organization a suitable place to work. Happy employees are surely those with inflated paychecks and unmatched benefit programs. They will be ecstatic to get a share of company profits in employee stock ownership plans, an extra week of vacation, or a gym membership. Studies show that the most important ingredient is simple: employees want trust. Great workplaces can maximize their human potential through effective leaders, meaningful values, and a deep foundation of trust with all employees. When those are in place, these workplaces benefit from improved innovation and financial growth. At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

Unlock Your Inspiration: Develop Your Personal Creativity
Learning Objective: Examine techniques for developing your creative talent Creativity has always been at the heart of business, but until now it has not been at the top of the management agenda. IN today’s business world, creativity is essential to the entrepreneurship that gets new businesses started and that sustains the best companies after they have reached global scale. But perhaps because creativity was considered unmanageable—too elusive and intangible to pin down—or because concentrating on it produced a less immediate payoff than improving execution, it has not been the focus of most employees. This session will examine how attendees can become more creative people. By stimulating creativity through various techniques (mind-mapping, DO-IT, SCAMPER, right and left brain thinking) participants learn to tap into their personal creativity and apply it to organizational challenges. At the end of this seminar, the participants will be able to:

Defining Your Future Presented by Northrop Grumman
Candidates and companies have a stake in each other’s futures. That collective future is at the end of that journey from opportunity seeker to new employee to someone exploring new growth opportunities in a company every day. The journey can be exciting, but sometimes challenging to navigate. To help with the navigation, getting answers to key questions can be essential, like: Will I fit in here? Does this company share my values? What are the basic benefits here? How have people like me succeeded here? What do I need to do to even apply? In this session, Northrop Grumman leaders will have answers to these questions and more to guide people on this journey and how to find a company that shares an applicant’s goals for the future.

Change is Coming: Leading and Managing Change in the Workplace
Learning Objective: Examine methods for creating effective change in the workplace Change is an essential ingredient to help your organization succeed. As you grow, you will invariably need to implement new tools, try new strategies, or break into new markets. Slight changes may be easy to execute, but what do you do when you need to enact a sweeping, organizational change? Leaders need an effective change management process. Whether adopting innovative technology or adapting to a drastic shift in an organization's core focus, change is a constant in any successful business. Managers play a fundamental role in successfully effecting changes across an organization, and meanwhile, humans, by nature, will often resist change out of fear of the unknown. By understanding the steps in effecting change and how to overcome resistance, a manager can successfully lead change at various levels of an organization. Without proper planning, trying to implement organizational change can lead to chaos, confusion, and reduced company velocity. Instead, you need to roll changes out carefully to make the transition as seamless as possible. At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

Influencing Others: Becoming a Strategic Influencer in the Workplace
Learning Objective: Examine methods to expand their personal influence through relationship building Your business relies on you to anticipate and predict their people’s needs for tomorrow. Knowing the answer to 'What is strategic influence' can help you understand why businesses require it. Strategic influence is a deliberate method of persuading people to do something or behave in a certain way. Strategic influence aims for willing cooperation rather than compliance. In business, it can help you to convince your team to implement your ideas or persuade others to follow your recommendations. Employees may use various forms of strategic influencing depending on whom you are attempting to persuade. Strategic influence may be significant in a workplace because it involves building connections, skills, and knowledge for later use. It may also enable you to get project funding and necessary resources, reduce project-related risks and negotiate contracts. Strategic influencing may help employees establish a strong connection with customers or employees, increase productivity and improve workplace morale. Understanding strategic influencing can show you why you need it to persuade others and learn how you can implement it in the workplace. At the end of this seminar, the participants will be able to:

Boeing Executive Signature Seminar Panel Discussion Presented by The Boeing Company
As we examine our world today - the economy, the workforce, our students, Information Technology (IT) and the evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) - we observe a shift in emphasis towards the value of broadening professional career knowledge through educational certificates and practical skills that can be learned on the job. People are on a journey of self-discovery and authenticity as they adapt to the progression of work force changes within companies and evolving technology. On the journey of ‘Becoming Everything You Are’, we see how the integration of people, process and technology create a holistic approach to self-development. Embracing who we are as people leads to an understanding of our values, our strengths and our weaknesses. We build relationships, which lead to meaningful connections with others on a personal level, and we embody mentorship as an integral part of becoming one’s true self. We embrace goal setting and planning as the processes by which we create an environment with clear objectives and a roadmap for personal development; thereby making continuous improvement essential as we refine, optimize and sustain our approach to self-betterment. We leverage technology to monitor and assess progress towards our goals. Finally we utilize online platforms to develop skills and gain knowledge, all while balancing the use of technology without succumbing to it. Join Boeing as we explore the integration of human elements, well-defined processes, and thoughtful use of technology as keys to developing people who move forward with resilience and determination, intentionally committed to lifelong learning, and becoming everything we are meant to be. Managing Diversity in the Workplace
Learning Objective: Examine methods for managing diversity in the workplace It is natural to want a one-size fits all approach to diversity issues so that everyone knows exactly what to do. Unfortunately, given the many dimensions of diversity, there is no easy strategy to follow. Advice and strategies given for one situation may not work given the same situation in another context. Managing diversity means acknowledging people's differences and recognizing these differences as valuable; it enhances good management practices by preventing discrimination and promoting inclusiveness. Good management alone will not necessarily help you collaborate effectively with a diverse workforce. It is often difficult to see what part diversity plays in a specific area of management. You have a key role in transforming the organizational culture so that it more closely reflects the values of our diverse workforce. At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

Inclusive Tech - Technology of Tomorrow: Born Inclusive Presented by Amazon
The advancements in AI and ML over the years have had a profound impact on every sector of society. There are extraordinary opportunities and responsibilities that emerge with new technology. For those who envision a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive world, we have an opportunity to seize this moment to leverage new technologies to drive systemic change in inclusion and equity. This session will focus on the intersection of technology and Inclusion. It will also explore the imperative that technology be “born inclusive.”
Key Takeaways: · We have been using this technology in our everyday lives for years. · We have an opportunity to create a more inclusive and equitable society through technology. · We need to innovate our approaches to inclusion and expand the work to include "bolted on" programs and built in and “born inclusive” AI and ML approaches ensuring that inclusion and equity is scalable and future proof. · We need to consider our investments in upskilling and supporting broader society’s ability to lean into technology. · We need to be at the table with builders and technologists and be prepared with the requisite awareness and skills to contribute once we are there. · We (as community leaders, policymakers, DEI leaderships, educators, industry leaders) must learn this technology and develop standards, to seize the opportunity that AI presents, while working with and holding builders and industry accountable, to create a more inclusive and equitable society. The New Silicon Initiative at Apple Presented by Apple
The Apple New Silicon Initiative (NSI) connects HBCU Faculty and Apple experts to help HBCU students gain access to cutting edge technology and hands-on learning opportunities to build sustainable programs that generate a pipeline of students entering careers in hardware technology. The initiative creates capacity through enhancing curriculum, designing labs, and providing scholarships and fellowships to undergraduate and graduate students. Silicon and hardware technologies are responsible for the key components that bring intelligence to smartphones, computers, tablets, smartwatches, and more. It's become increasingly difficult to find products that don’t have semiconductor technology in them. Everyday products, from wireless speakers to vacuums and coffee makers, contain sensors, processors, intelligent power management, wireless communication and more, that are all designed, architected, validated and tested by silicon engineers. This workshop describes the New Silicon Initiative and how custom silicon is used to produce industry-leading, power-efficient performance in the world’s most loved products.
