Full Schedule
The BEYA STEM Conference includes a variety of event spaces for attendees, exhibitors, and sponsors to learn, network, share ideas, and experience entertainment. Career Communications Group (CCG) is at the forefront of redefining how we gather to network, learn, recognize, and recruit talent. This year’s BEYA STEM Conference will be available in-person and online. We call this the digital twin experience (DTX), which offers attendees options to blend the in-person and digital experience in ways unique to their needs. Whether you attend in-person or online, you will share the same experience. BEYA36 will continue to leverage several technologies to bring the digital twin of the BEYA experience to the STEM community on its platform and in-person at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC.
Schedule is subject to change.
Events including "DTX Event" in the title will be occurring both in-person and online. Please review the session description for the in-person location.

Brian Culbertson
Brian Culbertson has charted a unique course after crafting a 20-album catalog and architecting more than 30 Billboard No. 1 singles. You’d be hard pressed to name another multi-instrumentalist who can mount a concert production that will keep him on the road for three consecutive months. Culbertson burst onto the scene in 1994 with a chart-topping album. Long Night Out signaled that a star was born. Today, his XX album (Roman numeral X equals 10) finds Culbertson making a record unlike any in his more than 20-year career. “There’s a lot of funky instrumentals, some pop-sounding tracks, a couple of slow jams, straight-ahead jazz, gospel, some vocals, lots of horns, and some straight-up funk,” he explains. “The album is very much a mixture of some modern-sounding programming along with live instruments, too. Definitely a cool sound.” Culbertson founded and curates the Napa Valley and Chicago Jazz Getaways, which have attracted guests from all over the globe. Whether you’re listening to music from XX at home or in concert, you’re hearing an engaging set from an artist at his peak.

Marion Meadows
Born in West Virginia, a passion for music led Marion Meadows down an eclectic path. At age nine, he began playing clarinet and studying classical music. In high school, he played tenor sax before migrating to soprano sax. During his college years, he played in several bands and jazz ensembles. But his career really took off at Grand Central. While waiting for a train, he pulled out his horn and began playing. The sweet sound caught the attention of Jay Chattaway, an award-winning composer of several Star Trek television scores. Chattaway hooked Meadows up with keyboardist Bob James, and he would go on to work with The Temptations, Eartha Kitt, Michael Bolton, Will Downing, and other legends. Meadows’ first RCA release "For Lover’s Only" was a huge success and was followed by his groundbreaking album Keep it Right There (1992). With his subsequent recordings, he became a staple of contemporary jazz. His recordings include Player's Club (2004), Dressed to Chill (2006), Secrets (2009), Whisper (2013), and most recently Soul Traveler, the first installment of a trilogy that showcases his current release, Soul City on the Shanachie Records label.

Welcome to the Workplace: The New Gender in the Workplace (DTX Event)
DTX Event: First impressions say a lot when you meet someone. Do these impressions impact the way you interact with them? Naturally, our brains place people into larger groups or categories. These assumptions are helpful to some yet harmful to others. In business, subtle biases can become major roadblocks to fair and inclusive diversity practices. We gravitate toward certain types of people or simply forget to acknowledge others. These biases can also create challenges that may include racial and gender stereotypes that cause our contributions to be ignored or diminished. How do we become examples of fair and inclusive practices? How do we challenge our culture to move toward greater levels of awareness? This seminar will challenge your personal biases and address ways to engage in conversations and increase cultural awareness. At the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:

HBCU & PWI Research Partnerships: Making Change Together (DTX Event)
DTX Event:
Location: Omni Shoreham Hotel Room: Congressional A Learning Objective: For the US to maintain its global leadership position we must preserve a vibrant, future-looking research ecosystem, which in turn requires a broad, diverse pool of highly capable, talented researchers in all areas, but especially in STEM. This can only be achieved by broadening the participation of students in underrepresented groups in the research enterprise at the national level, which can be accomplished by establishing partnerships between majority and minority serving institutions. This session will focus on research partnerships between HBCU’s and PWI’s by providing examples, and exploring the features of such partnerships that are essential for success. This session will feature panelists from R1 research institutions, HBCU’s, and the NSF with experience in developing successful research partnerships between PWI’s and HBCU’s. They will discuss examples of successful collaborations, factors that are essential to consider in developing these relationships, and funding opportunities.

The Many Faces of Bias: Types of Bias that Create Reality and Alter Outcomes (DTX Event)
DTX Event: Learning Objective: Examine the impact of diversity, equity, and inclusion on business outcomes When you meet someone, what are some of your initial assumptions? Do these assumptions impact the way you interact with them? Our brains naturally place people into larger groups or categories. These assumptions are helpful to some, yet harmful to others. In business, subtle biases can become major roadblocks to fair and inclusive diversity practices. We gravitate toward certain types of people, or simply forget to acknowledge others. As minorities, these biases create challenges that may include racial and gender stereotypes that cause our contributions to be ignored or diminished. How do we become examples of fair and inclusive practices? How do we challenge our culture to move toward greater levels of awareness? Studies have shown that men become less biased toward women when they discuss needs and are forced to challenge assumptions. This session will challenge your personal biases and address ways to engage in conversations that evaluate faulty thinking and increase cultural awareness for better individual and business outcomes. Sustaining Small Businesses during COVID-19 Pandemic Panel Part II (DTX Event)
DTX Event:
Location: Omni Shoreham Hotel Room: Executive Room The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has detrimentally impacted small businesses. Companies of this size, unfortunately, are less likely to have substantial savings, insurance or credit to weather a crisis of this magnitude, thus causing many to fold (close). Small businesses have been and still are economically vulnerable during this devastating time. Financial inclusion is more important now, more than ever. Offering methods to sustain small businesses, months after the COVID-19 disruptions, will give light to an extremely dark set of circumstances.
The Facebook & Small Business Roundtable, stated that “about a third [small businesses] had temporarily stopped operating, and by mid-May more than half had laid off or furloughed employees.” Small businesses have proven to be the most vulnerable. This panel will explore ways to recover, re-brand, and re-invent small businesses while adapting to this new normal. Evidence about the longer-term impacts of COVID-19 and relief programs that are available to business owners will also be discussed. Our panelist will provide techniques on how to respond to these challenging times and offer solutions to help businesses/business owners remain resilient.
At the end of this session, you will be enlightened on:

Engineering – HBCU STEM Career Progression: Military and Beyond (DTX Event)
DTX Event
Location: Omni Shoreham Hotel Room: Executive Room The President and CEO of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), Mr. Michael Lomax, stated that “HBCUs make a significant impact nationwide. HBCUs comprise only three percent of the country’s colleges and universities yet produce almost 20% of all African American graduates. They play an even greater role when it comes to students pursuing degrees and careers in STEM fields. While Black and White students intend to pursue STEM degrees at similar rates, African American students in any STEM field are far less likely to attain their desired degrees. HBCUs are a vital bridge to close the gap: 25% of African American graduates with STEM degrees come from HBCUs.” This session will speak to the profound thoughts of professionals who are among the 25% of African American STEM graduates. Our Panelists will provide a holistic perspective on their HBCU experiences, career progression, and beyond. They will share their rich history and discuss how the culture and traditions taught have transcended into their professional lives.

National Perspective on Global Energy Part II (DTX Event)
DTX Event:
Location: Omni Shoreham Hotel Room: Executive Room Over the past 25 years, the global energy landscape has drastically changed in composition. This panel discussion will provide an analysis of long-term energy projections from governmental, inter-governmental, and private organizations, like Army Corps of Engineers, Diamond Energy and the Department of Energy. Many projections from the world’s leading climate experts have proven that disregarding climate policies will increase our global energy consumption by approximately 30% through 2040 and beyond, led largely by fossil fuels. Without a major shift in current policy and technology trends, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions continue to grow. The President and CEO of the American Petroleum Institute, Mr. Mike Sommers stated “the natural gas and oil industry is reducing emissions while fueling a modern way of life globally. Those of us in the energy industry know that to power our modern way of life, we always must be agile and innovative to meet the world’s ever-increasing need for affordable and reliable energy. We know, too, that the energy powering our world must be cleaner.” This session will speak to the profound thoughts of leaders who also have similar thoughts regarding global energy. Our panelists will provide a national perspective on energy, giving light to new innovations that will help improve the global environment. At the end of this session, you should be able to:

Having Our Say: The Influence of Black Women at the Table Presented by Raytheon Technologies (DTX Event)
DTX Event:
Location: Omni Shoreham Hotel Room: Congressional B As a community, we have grown accustomed to the voices of influence at the proverbial “table” being reflective of very few black women, if any at all. The closer the table gets to the C-suite, the influence of the black female voice diminishes even more. Raytheon Technologies, a leader with a global reach specializing in defense and commercial markets, is inviting you to an eye-opening panel discussion with RTX executives on amplifying the influence of Black Women at the table. There is work to be done and we are being intentional about having our say in ways that will bring awareness, visibility and change to the tables of influence at every level. Accordingly, our executive panelists will be “having their say” about: their personal journeys to the table; tips to encourage black women to increase their influence in impactful ways; how to continue to render that influence in virtual settings; the approach for gaining the sponsorship of those who are already at the table; and the importance of leveraging the influence of black women beyond the boardroom. The discussion is sure to bring perspective and a basis for action as the panelists are all leaders of influence at Raytheon Technologies and in their respective communities. This seminar will be a conversation that brings consciousness to the power and significance of Black Women having influence throughout their respective career journeys and community endeavors. The RTX executive panelists are having their say and we will be listening as they continue to create avenues of success for black women. Planning for Success: Increasing Personal Effectiveness Through Time Management (DTX Event)
DTX Event: Learning Objective: Develop time management skills for better organization and productivity Students who have learned how to effectively manage time during high school are better prepared for the rigors of college study. Regardless of preparation, it takes time to adjust to college. Improve your time management skills by setting goals and not deviating from them. Even students who managed time well during high school often struggle when they begin college. Students are overwhelmed with large course loads, extracurricular activities, and other social activities. Although being in college can be overwhelming, it is possible to complete everything that must be done in a timely and efficient manner. Developing time management and organizational skills is the key to working efficiently. The best way to better manage time is to develop daily schedules. Most organized people plan daily, weekly, and monthly tasks. This seminar will show you how to be self-motivated, leading to better organizational skills, productivity, and efficiency.
