Surrogate Safety Measures (SSMs) provide an alternative for safety and work zone assessments using conflict analysis and near misses. Utilizing the traffic data collected in the work zone of a design-build project in Miami, a study was conducted to demonstrate the application of SSMs to assess the safety implications for road users as well as workers. Video traffic data was collected using drones, and video analytics with artificial intelligence technology was applied to process the collected data and conduct the analysis. Discover how these findings can help agencies monitor the safety of work zones in real-time by deploying or adjusting several countermeasures.
