In 2022, FHWA named Pavement Friction Management (PFM) using Continuous Pavement Friction Measurement (CPFM) a Proven Safety Countermeasure. Since then, several states have begun implementing PFM/CPFM strategies that take a holistic view of reducing skid-related crashes and improving roadway safety. Join this two-part, facilitated discussion of PFM/CPFM, friction enhancing treatments and key considerations for treatment/countermeasure selection and project prioritization. Part one will spotlight PFM/CPFM tools, analyses and strategies used by DOTs to evaluate the role of friction on their networks and make data-driven decisions. Part two will feature a guided exercise on the development of a PFM program grounded in the components, strategies and tools outlined in the first half of the session.
