UDOT has been developing a connected vehicle ecosystem since 2019 to provide the structure for existing and future connected vehicles to meet the strategic goals of UDOT, including improving safety and efficiency throughout the state. The first two phases have been deployed. The first phase provides enhanced data collection and insights into roadway conditions and travel behavior. The second builds on this to add in Transit Signal Priority and Snow Plow Preemption. The ability to deploy this advanced technology is made possible by an existing foundation of fiber optic communication, advanced signal detection and controllers, and the unified central signal platform operating statewide. Utah is unique in operating all traffic signals statewide from a single central software platform. This provides real-time status of all signals statewide, where operational changes can be made at the traffic operations center regardless of ownership. Agencies agree not to act on others' signals without permission, but this cooperation allows traffic to flow more efficiently across jurisdictions along the Wasatch Front whether state or locally owned. Deployment strategies will be presented.
