In 2008, horizontal curves made up only five percent of our Nation’s highway miles, yet more than 25 percent of fatal crashes occurred on horizontal curves. HFST is an emerging surface application and technology that is proven to reduce run off road crashes and related injuries and fatalities, and help motorists maintain better control in dry and wet driving conditions. Maricopa County DOT received Highway Safety Improvement Program funding that was applied towards HFST applications.
