Colorized lane markings are a rapidly growing safety feature used to protect and encourage cyclists. Despite the rapid growth in colorized bicycle lanes and bicycle commuting, there is a dearth of standards governing colorized bike lanes and specifications detailing how to achieve a cost effective and quality installation. Review the MUTCD language around bicycle facilities, standards being drafted by AASHTO and individual government agencies in effort to boost quality and ensure safety, and laboratory and field evaluations with a focus on friction and color.
