Making EHRs SAFER: Evidence-based Informatics Solutions for Supporting Clinician Cognition
While the use of electronic health records (EHRs) has improved the coordination and quality of patient care, poor EHR design and usability can lead to issues affecting clinician cognition that may result in adverse events that can harm patients. CMS is now requiring eligible hospitals to attest that they performed a safety assessment of their EHR systems using the ONC SAFER Guides. Full adoption of SAFER recommendations, however, is low particularly in two domains: using health IT safely and using health IT to monitor and improve safety. This session highlights recent research to develop and evaluate methodologies and tools that can help healthcare organizations make progress in these domains. Participants in this session will learn about how to use these methodologies and tools and engage in a discussion (led by an author of the SAFER Guides) about next steps to assist with adoption of SAFER practices.
