ACMI Collen Award Panel Presentation: Informatics Approaches to Address Epistemic Injustice for Healthcare Consumers
Twenty years ago, the AMIA 2003 Spring Congress entitled "Bridging the Digital Divide: Informatics and Vulnerable Populations" convened 178 experts to develop a framework for a national agenda in information and communication technology to enhance the health and health care of underserved populations. Efforts within health and biomedical informatics community as well as within broader society have led to some progress in empowering healthcare consumers and promoting health equity. To further this conversation within the AMIA community, this panel will specifically address epistemic injustice – wrong done to someone related to their capacity as a knower and reasoner – and the related concepts of testimonial injustice (prejudice regarding credibility of someone’s words) and hermeneutical injustice (disadvantage due to gap in collective interpretive resources). Through brief presentations and a moderated discussion, panelists will specifically discuss how informatics approaches and tools can mitigate such injustice.
