DEI Membership Survey Findings Presentation
For the past six months the AMIA Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee and subcommittees have been working to define the programs and initiatives for AMIA’s DEI efforts. More than 75 AMIA members volunteered to participate in the subcommittee work. The DEI Committee is led by Chair Tiffani J. Bright, PhD, FACMI; and Co-Chairs Oliver Bear Don’t Walk IV, PhD, and Robert J. Lucero, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN.
Survey Analysis Team: Bilikis Akindele, MD, MMCi, CPHIMS; Nate Apathy, PhD; Jose Florez-Arango, MD, PhD; Oliver Bear Don’t Walk IV, PhD; Jeffrey Nielson, MD, MS, FACEP; Vickie Nguyen, PhD; IIan Rubinfeld, MD, MBA, FACS, FCCM, FCCP; Amit Saha, PhD, MS.
To help inform AMIA’s efforts to build a more inclusive and diverse AMIA, the five DEI Subcommittees created the AMIA 2022 DEI Membership Survey. Subcommittees: Recruitment; Retention and Advancement; Communications; Education, Governance, and Policy; Advancement of Health Equity and Antiracism in Healthcare.
The survey addresses:
- knowledge and perceptions of AMIA’s efforts to improve representation of all members’ backgrounds and identities
- progress and barriers to create a sense of belonging within the organization
- progress and potential directions to promote health equity and antiracism in biomedical informatics and healthcare more broadly
- knowledge and perceptions related to inclusive language and DEI in the context of interactions within AMIA and scientific communication, • perceptions related to opportunities for being included in AMIA at different levels (e.g., personal, professional, leadership), events, and opportunitie
- recruitment of members into AMIA and DEI activities, including how and what you currently or could do to encourage membership and participation in DEI activities, and
- perceptions related to DEI education, policy, and governance in AMIA.
The presentation is based on Phase I collection of data from 54 questions in August and September 2022. A second round of member and non-member data Phase II will be collected October through November 7, 2022 and incorporated into the final results. The results of this survey will inform future work by AMIA and the DEI Committee.
