The field of medical informatics increasingly leverage emerging everyday digital technology to recruit human subjects, implement interventions, collect and analyze data, and disseminate findings. The scale at and the manner in which information from emerging digital technology can be collected and analyzed for research differ greatly from traditional in-person randomized controlled trials. These changes have the potential to shift human subject research paradigms and alter core concepts of research ethics, such as informed consent, autonomy, and confidentiality. Artificial intelligence is now commonly embedded in smartphone applications. Algorithms and models evolve with the personal information that people provide through their use of digital technologies. The changing landscape in which personal information is collected, analyzed, and shared and people’s changing perceptions regarding personal information raise questions about the suitability of the prevailing ethical framework for research with human subjects. The proposed Collaborative workshop aims to develop an ethical framework that is adequate for protecting human subjects in the digital age and develop meaningful resources for the scientific community. To do so, we propose to hold a workshop in which a diverse set of experts and researchers in bioethics, medicine, nursing, clinical psychology, computing, and engineering will discuss example research cases to address how current ethical, legal, regulatory, or social issues, either in degree or kind, address (or not address) the use of digital technologies in human subject research in the face of people’s changing perceptions on sharing personal information and the ubiquitous use of artificial intelligence in everyday digital technology. The workshop will generate white papers and training guidelines outlining shortcomings of current ethical framework for addressing the ethical, legal, and social issues related to the use of digital technologies in research to further inform the designing requirements of training and educational tools for professionals, students, researchers, and public. *If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. A Learning Health System (LHS) uses a continuous cycle of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting health data to change practice based on the evidence. LHS is an ideal framework used to improve healthcare. A barrier to the implementation of the LHS, is identifying racial bias and disparities within the cycle of the system. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is seeking information from the public on racial bias in clinical decision making that may contribute to health disparities. Increasing recognition of system-wide health disparities is motivating researchers and clinicians to build fair LHS; however, they still do not understand where and how to approach the issue. This workshop will be a collaborative learning space focused on the topic of racial bias in LHS, as well as current efforts and future directions to reduce bias and improve diversity. Participants will recognize existing biases within a LHS framework and be able to move toward reducing bias in research and clinical practice. IPS03: The Challenge of Measuring Healthcare Quality in a Post-pandemic World (IMO Presentation))
Join the chat*
*If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the US healthcare system introduced new rules to improve interoperability and data sharing (21st Century Cures Act). Long-standing regulatory incentives to measure and improve quality required the flow of good data between providers/institutions, payers and regulators. “Good” was initially defined as standardized, process-level data elements which were relatively easily extracted from existing information flows. The pandemic demonstrated that those data streams were not sufficient to respond to public health emergencies, stratify patients or assess outcomes effectively. Capturing detailed clinical data at the point of care must be persisted through the information ecosystem if we hope to provide an effective database to support public health, research and measure outcome of our healthcare system. This panel will describe the state of affairs in quality measurement, the problems of poor data quality, and key concepts to capture, persist and transform complex clinical data to support the future, post-pandemic health system. S02: Panel - The Women in AMIA-led Podcast and Focus on Diversity: Past, Present, and Future
Join the chat*
*If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. Women and underrepresented minorities are entering biomedical informatics or achieving leadership roles at a lower rate than other groups. As part of the efforts to address this discrepancy, the Women in AMIA (WIA) Initiative developed the Women in AMIA Podcast in 2017 to showcase women at all stages of their informatics careers. The intent was to increase awareness of women’s contributions to informatics, counterbalance stereotypes, and build the pipeline to leadership. Although the podcast has some reach (an average of 220 downloads per podcast), the podcast leaders wanted to broaden its reach to a wider and more diverse audience. To this end, the podcast team partnered with WIA Leadership Program members to rebrand the podcast and launch on a broader scale. In this panel, we will report on the process and results of these efforts including 1) podcast rebranding, 2) social media approach, and 3) podcast and social media metrics of success. S12: Panel - Reverse clinician burnout trends by exploring clues from global variances
Join the chat*
*If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. Clinician burnout is a growing problem in the United States and to a much greater extent than in other countries around the world. The Covid pandemic has increased the rate of clinician burnout to the point where there are mounting concerns of clinician shortages in the very near future1 and at enormous cost.2 In this context, it is increasingly clear that urgent efforts are needed to reverse this dangerous trend. This panel will focus on root causes of clinician burnout, especially on how features of healthcare policies in regions outside the US seem to reduce or avoid clinician burnout and may model how to reverse the current trends if adopted in the US and in other countries where clinician burnout is prevalent. S25: Panel - The COVID-19 Pandemic as Catalyst: The Acceleration of Registry Science in the 21st Century to Address Novel Challenges
Join the chat*
*If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. With the rise of the pandemic, there has been a renewed focus on the construction and utilization of patient registries. Though in use for over 75 years, registry use has been reshaped by this crisis. The reason why registry use continues to grow is due to the fact that EHRs, while important for patient care and administrative issues to run a healthcare institution, oftentimes do not collect enough of the right data about specific medical issues. Clinical registries have been stood up and repurposed to address the need for rapid information on the appropriate management of Covid-19, especially for patients with secondary conditions, including cancer and autoimmune diseases. For example, in rare diseases, registries are often the only mechanism to collect enough relevant data to estimate the prevalence, understand the presentation and progression. Registry Science is the branch of Informatics that bridges the gap between clinical care and clinical research through high-quality, focused data assets. This panel will discuss how registry science has emerged and advanced in the past 20 years and highlight important use cases and informatics and data challenges, up to and including how the COVID-19 pandemic is raising the profile and need of Registry Science. S37: Panel - To Share or not to Share: Exploring the Ethical Implications of Sharing Personal Health Data with Patients and Informal Caregivers
Join the chat*
*If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. While ethical practices of electronic health data sharing among organizations are being debated, there is less attention on the ethical practices surrounding organizations returning personal health data back to patients or their informal caregivers. There is moral ambiguity regarding the return of personal health data--withholding the data may cause harm, but returning it in a way that may not be understood by patients, or could compromise privacy, could also cause harm. In this panel, we will explore three specific scenarios related to the return of personal health data to patients or informal caregivers. We will present primary data from multiple studies exploring these scenarios from the perspectives of key stakeholders, including patients, informal caregivers, and healthcare professionals. The audience will engage in interactive discussions with the panel exploring the potential benefits and harms of returning personal health data to patients and informal caregivers. We will discuss each scenario through the lens of an existing ethical framework, articulating core values which must be protected (e.g., distributive justice, individual self-determination, and privacy) and exploring policies that adhere to guiding ethical principles (e.g., fairness, autonomy, and transparency). Join the chat*
*If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. Social isolation and loneliness are underappreciated health risks associated with higher rates of mortality, depression, and cognitive decline, particularly in older adults, and are exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This panel discusses implications of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, report entitled “Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults: Opportunities for the Health Care System.” The report outlines numerous roles for informatics in addressing this public health challenge, including infrastructure for coordination among community providers, and clinical and community interventions. The panel will review the recommendations and their relationship to social determinants of health, discuss how the pandemic has intensified and expanded the public health risks related to social isolation and loneliness, and how informatics may play a role both in addressing risks and creating resilient systems for future pandemic threats. The audience will be engaged in a discussion to identify strategies for effective implementation of the recommendations. W19: Patenting in Academia: Myths and Methods
SOLD OUT

*If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. While the goal to publish one’s work is a well-known time-honored tradition, and expectation, in most academic settings, the path to patenting often seems a bit less familiar, accessible or desirable and thus is less traveled. There are many misunderstandings or myths surrounding the topic of patenting, preventing would-be inventors from taking the first step on the path. This 3 hour instructional workshop will identify and dispel many of these myths and provide practical guidance on the patenting journey from a collection of successful and highly experienced inventors, with numerous real-world examples and use cases to help an inventor at any level of experience to get their ideas from ideation to patent pending status. This workshop will also provide insight for institutional leaders to best incentivize their organization to increase patent making efforts and facilitate the process for the success of everyone involved. S93: Panel - Adaptable Patient facing and Clinical Decision Support Systems: The Next Frontier
Join the chat*
*If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. Clinical decision support (CDS) systems can demonstrate their full potential if they are context-sensitive and can tailor their interaction with the user. Adaptable CDS aims to achieve this goal by accounting for various context and user characteristics and therefore avoid the many undesired outcomes of current CDS systems. To this end, the panel will begin with a discussion by each panelist of their experience with adaptable CDS in various health care settings with decision support that targets both clinicians and patients. This will be followed with an interactive session, in which the audience and panelists will prioritize related challenges (generic, or clinical setting specific) in development of adaptable CDS. Finally, we will discuss known effective and potentially new strategies to address these challenges. W07: Connectathon: Making Open-Source Global Health Systems Talk to Each Other (sponsored by Global Health Informatics and Open Source Working Groups)
SOLD OUT
Join the chat*
*If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. Building on last year’s Global Health Informatics workshop, there was a demonstrable interest in learning and understanding the tools that are available in the Global Health space. Due to the nature of the work, most of these tools are open-source, or at least have aspects that are open-source. The benefits and drawbacks of this approach have been discussed many times before, but briefly, open-source encourages the use and sharing of software and applications, lowering the bar to entry and widening the potential community of users. However, with this there is often more time that is required to set-up and maintain some of these systems. In order to become more familiar with these technologies, we are proposing a hands-on connectathon to allow a deep dive into some of these technologies. We encourage anyone interested to bring their preferred toolkit (suggestions include, but are by no means limited to, OpenMRS, REDCap, FHIR-FLI, the Community Health Toolkit and DHIS2), with the goal to explore their setup and use, and ideally to learn how to connect them to the other technologies available. In addition to trying to bridge the connections between different technologies, we would like to try and bridge the gap that often exists between the technical and the clinical. We often hear questions about whether or not clinicians are qualified to be involved in software development, but we rarely hear questions about whether or not developers are qualified to be involved in clinical care. The answer, of course, is that both are needed, and as part of this workshop, we will encourage technical experts to work with content experts. We believe that this will create the opportunity for stakeholders of different backgrounds to address gaps in GHI systems that have the opportunity to help impact global health in LMICs. S04: Panel - Public Health Informatics in a Global Pandemic: In the COVID response trenches
Join the chat*
*If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. The COVID-19 pandemic unfolded rapidly around the globe over the course of 2020 - 2021. As the pandemic has progressed, public health agencies and healthcare provider organizations (HPOs) have sought to gather, manage, analyze, and share data and information to track disease spread, establish response plans, and keep the public informed. These responses require informatics methods and tools, such as data integration and harmonization, analytical modeling, data visualization, and a variety of decision support modalities. However, many stakeholders struggled to respond due to inefficiencies, antiquated infrastructure, and poor communications systems. In this panel we will discuss public health informatics related to COVID-19 from different vantage points: state government, regional health information exchange, county government, and HPO partnerships with local and state officials. We will discuss lessons learned, best practices, and what the world and the field should be investing in now to make sure we’re better prepared for the next public health emergency, global or otherwise. S33: Panel - Privacy-Preserving Federated Biomedical Data Analysis
Join the chat*
*If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. Federated learning has emerged as a powerful complement to centralized healthcare data repositories due to their flexibility, nimbleness, and decentralized gatekeeping capabilities. Many biomedical data networks (e.g., pSCANNER, PCORnet, eMerge, SCOR, etc.) have been established to enable the use of electronic health records (EHR) and genomic data for research. In these settings, data are often distributed across different institutions. Due to privacy or other concerns, patient-level data cannot be transmitted outside some institutions, so a mechanism to support data analysis without sharing patient-level data is needed. This naturally leads to the development of privacy-preserving federated biomedical data analysis. Various technologies have been emerging to support studies across distributed networks. The goal of this panel is to provide the AMIA community with 1) an overview of current progress and technical developments in federated biomedical data analysis; 2) discussions of novel techniques for computing in horizontally or vertically partitioned datasets; and 3) insights into practical deployment, current challenges, and opportunities. S44: Panel - Health Information Exchanges and Public Health Data: Lessons from COVID
Join the chat*
*If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. The COVID pandemic has focused attention on what public health data we collect and how we collect and potentially share that data. Historically public health agencies have relied on reporting, typically mandated, of pre-defined data fields specifically tailored to previously known questions about the specific illness (COVID) or to syndromic surveillance of pre-defined symptoms. Today with widespread electronic medical record data and health information exchanges (HIEs) exchanging that data at national scale, we have the opportunity move from mandated reporting to exchange and re-use of data already captured clinically. This panel discussion features HIE experts who have exchanged public health data at scale throughout the United States. Individuals whose activities and experiences will be most impacted by a new technology should have input into the design process. These individuals offer invaluable expertise with respect to perspectives and preferences for the workflow or activity the technology is intended to impact. How well a technology fits into a specific workflow influences its adoption and use. As the biomedical field moves toward personalized medicine, collaborative design is increasingly important in order to better reflect individualized activities and experiences. At the same time there are pragmatic challenges such as participant recruitment and engagement in the co-design process. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed researchers to find novel and creative ways of co-designing with end-users. In this panel, we will discuss co-design core concepts and research trends in biomedical informatics through practical examples from the research experiences of a diverse set of panelists. S90: Panel - Home Healthcare to Primary Care Data Interoperability Challenges and Opportunities
Join the chat*
*If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. Medicare patients are expected to have a primary care office visit within 2 weeks of hospital discharge. Over 1 million of these patients receive home healthcare (HHC) services. Despite HHC electronically collecting a wealth of patient assessment data, primary care receives a fax with little data asynchronous to the visit. Informatics has opportunities to address the interoperability challenge to improve patient safety and outcomes. This panel discusses challenges and opportunities in information continuity for primary care to have the right HHC information at the right time. Panelists will also discuss applying predictive analytics approaches with HHC data to identify rehospitalization risk factors, which if communicated to primary care could trigger preventive interventions. Session learning objectives are: describe visit and HHC information; identify HHC to primary care interoperability barriers; discuss how HHC data can inform primary care of patient risk factors; and describe risk prediction models using HHC data. *If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. The World Health Assembly approved a resolution to adopt the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision, (ICD-11) on May 25, 2019. It will go into effect as the new international standard on January 1, 2022. The 11th edition of the ICD has improved usability and updated scientific content. It was designed for use in our digital world, with the release of a number of tools, an ICD Application Programming Interface (API) and Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) for easier analysis and linkage to other systems. This workshop will introduce the ICD-11 Foundation, as designed by the World Health Organization (WHO), and its Mortality and Morbidity Statistics (MMS) linearization. This will include an overview of ICD-11 structure and content, highlighting new classification concepts and methods such as multiple parenting, extensions, concept clusters, post-coordination, and global unique identifiers. Attendees will then be provided a list of concepts to investigate ICD-11 MMS’s ability to post-coordinate and form a compositional expression followed by an appraisal of ICD-10-CM’s ability to represent the same concept. WHO’s ICD-11 tools will be utilized which can be accessed via computer, tablet, or smartphone. A facilitated discussion will explore the results of the exercise and identify expected challenges to implementing a version of ICD-11 in the US. This dialogue is proposed to inform and influence policy makers preparing for the transition, as outlined in the NCVHS November 25, 2019 Recommendation Letter on Preparing for Adoption of ICD-11 as a Mandated US Health Data Standard. All attendees will be asked to complete a short survey regarding the use of ICD-11 MMS and the WHO tools, focused on ease of use and including questions such as whether or not the learners believe a clinical modification is needed to replace current uses of ICD-10-CM in the US. S06: Panel - Advancing the Use of FHIR in Research: An Update on NIH’s Efforts
Join the chat*
*If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. On July 30, 2019, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued a notice “to encourage NIH researchers to explore the use of the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources® (FHIR®) standard to capture, integrate, and exchange clinical data for research purposes and to enhance capabilities to share research data.” Recently, the Office of Data Science Strategy, NIH, in collaboration with the National Library of Medicine, commissioned an assessment of the landscape of FHIR use in research. The summary findings suggest that FHIR is not yet broadly used for research purposes. There are several challenges from the institutional level to the individual level. Institutions’ decision to implement FHIR involves financial commitment not only to the technology but also to an ongoing need to train their staff. Few researchers currently know how to use FHIR or leverage it in their research studies. This panel will provide an update on NIH’s activities to advance the use of FHIR in research. Panelists will discuss the challenges and opportunities in using FHIR for research with attendees and solicit feedback on NIH’s work to date and input on strategies NIH can implement to better leverage FHIR in research. *If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. The healthcare industry is transforming along three dimensions: societal and economic, individuals, and organizations. First, scarce resources and rising demand are driving a relentless focus on cost reduction and quality with improved and equitable access. Second, patients and families are empowered with digital tools such as smart devices, wearables, telemedicine, and remote monitoring that are driving new expectations in standards of care and ownership of health interventions and outcomes. Third, business and operating models are driving consolidation and disruption, new entrants, and an evolving regulatory environment. Having healthcare informatics experience in various sectors (e.g. academic, industry, and government) can provide a broader perspective about the challenges of and opportunities for developing and applying informatics and innovative technologies to facilitate healthcare transformation and collaboration leading to advances in science. In this panel, we present the experiences of several individuals with successful informatics careers that involved transitions from academia to government, government to industry, industry to academia, and academia to industry. The panelists will share their lessons on how to be successful in a dynamic environment, support for research, growth opportunities, skills development, and how their time in one sector influenced their career choice. *If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. COVID-19 data tracking and reporting efforts have highlighted the vital importance and ongoing challenges associated with linking patient data using demographic variables. Currently, match rates between organizations can be as low as fifty percent, resulting in barriers in information exchange, introducing safety risks, and increasing costs. The difficulty of patient matching is multifactorial and includes the variation in quality and availability of matching variables across healthcare organizations and time as well as restrictions in access to patient unique identifiers due to data security and privacy concerns. Participants in this panel discussion will present 1) current lessons learned and evolving challenges to successful patient matching 2) current state-of-art patient matching approaches and promising new methods 3) recent policies and legislation affecting patient matching, 4) the changing nature of patient matching features available over the past 10 years across a diversity of care settings and how these features were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Join the chat*
*If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. Given the emphasis on digital health solutions and the increasing number of mobile health applications, patient-generated health data (PGHD) are abundant. However, without the availability of PGHD at the point of care, some of their utility may be lost. If presented to clinicians at the point of care, PGHD have the potential to improve patient outcomes by providing new insights into the patient’s longitudinal status and decreasing nursing documentation burden. This interactive panel of nursing informatics leaders will discuss key findings from several studies aimed at leveraging PGHD within clinical workflows. Session participants will have the opportunity to discuss successes and challenges, suggest a road map for additional research, and envision PGHD use cases across the continuum of care. W12: Clinical Decision Support Standards Using Health Level Seven International’s Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources: Latest Developments and What You Need to Know
SOLD OUT
Join the chat*
*If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. Clinical decision support (CDS) can help improve clinical practice and health behaviors. The use of health information technology (HIT) standards for encoding data, representing knowledge and delivering knowledge-based interventions in turn can help facilitate implementation of CDS. However, many standards from numerous standards development organizations (SDOs) exist. These are variously incorporated into vendor software, and consensus on the use of these standards is lacking. Moreover, new work in the past year on CDS standards and in related areas such as clinical quality measurement has increased the complexity of this domain. The emergence of the Health Level Seven International (HL7) Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standard for patient data representation is particularly pertinent in light of its prominent inclusion in the 21st Century Cures Act Final Rule published by the Office of the National Coordinator for HIT (ONC) in the USA. Accordingly, the leaders of this half-day instructional workshop, who are co-chairs of the HL7 CDS and Arden Syntax Work Groups, will address two overarching educational objectives focused as a unifying theme on CDS standards that intersect with FHIR. First, attendees will learn key details of and latest developments in extant and proposed HIT standards that are applicable to CDS and which they may need to use in their work. Second, the attendees will recognize how these standards relate to one another and can be used to implement CDS that improves outcomes. These include the HL7 Arden Syntax, Clinical Quality Language (CQL), CDS Hooks, SMART on FHIR, FHIR Clinical Reasoning and Infobutton standards. Through interaction with workshop leaders, attendees will be able to contribute ideas regarding refinement and use of HIT standards to facilitate CDS. W21: Clinicians on FHIR®
SOLD OUT
Join the chat*
*If you are trying to access this chat via the AMIA Events Mobile App, click "Join AMIA Chat Sessions" from the app homepage and navigate to the session. HL7 created Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) as a next generation standard to address clinical data interoperability. Now FHIR has evolved from a standard in trial use to a requirement under US federal rules as an API for patient access to their data in EHR systems as well as their claims data in payer systems. Addtionally, the NIH has indicated their intent to support the expansion of FHIR capability for clinical and translational research. Clinicians on FHIR evolved as an event held at each HL7 Working Group Meeting (3 times yearly) to educate clinicians about HL7 FHIR and provide feedback to the HL7 FHIR team regarding the clinical viability and usability of the FHIR standard. This AMIA pre-symposium workshop will once again bring the Clinicians on FHIR activity to a broader clinical audience attending the AMIA Fall Symposium. The workshop is designed to educate attendees about HL7 FHIR and tools available to access, review, and provide feedback to the HL7 FHIR team regarding the evolving HL7 FHIR standard. It is also intended to make the audience aware of the potential of FHIR for innovation in their organizations. The faculty will provide lectures describing HL7 FHIR history, background, and fundamental principles. Examples of applications using the SMART on FHIR platform will also be discussed. The new federal requirements for FHIR APIs in EHR systems will be outlined. After this initial overview of FHIR, the attendees will be guided through using online tools to examine HL7 FHIR Resources (the basic building blocks of FHIR) and build basic common FHIR Profiles (implementation guides for specific use cases).
