The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) will hold its National Conference & Exhibition in Phoenix, Arizona, on November 9-11, 2017. Preconference events including workshops, cultural and school tours, and the IdeaLab (best practices showcase) will take place November 8 and 9. The conference theme is “Beyond the Horizon.”
A division of the American Library Association (ALA), AASL promotes the improvement and extension of library services in elementary and secondary schools as a means of strengthening the total education program. AASL supports the position that an effective school library program has a certified school librarian at the helm, provides personalized learning environments, and offers equitable access to resources to ensure a well-rounded education for every student.
The organization’s mission reads: The American Association of School Librarians empowers leaders to transform teaching and learning.
Notable for the 2017 conference is the launch of the new AASL "National School Library Standards." Dedicated programming – including half-day preconferences, a general session, Unconference, and concurrent sessions – will introduce the standards and provide an overview of the implementation plan. The new standards will be available for purchase at the conference bookstore or can pre-purchased during registration. All preconference attendees will receive copies as part of their registration fee.
