Cultivate Collaboration, Peak Performance, Innovation, and Engagement
What do top managers and leaders do to gain voluntary contributions of discretionary performance, engagement, alignment, ownership and creativity? How do they create accountability for desired results at every level of an organization? How do they ensure that key strategies are not slowly suffocated, but instead produce extraordinary results? They embrace the abundance of ideas, talent, leadership and differentiation that exists in all organizations.
Peak performing teams and cultures understand that leveraging diversity of thought, being open to perspectives of others, open and candid communication, talking about the difficult things to see reality and offering and seeking feedback in a positive forward-looking manner are essential. Every individual has natural strengths that they can bring to a team. When we embrace this fundamental teams become stronger, more creative, and perform at higher levels. It is crucial to bring out the best of what every team member has to offer. Teams that are aware of this and integrate these ideas into their culture will position themselves to thrive and excel in the New World or Work. Speaker(s): Mike Evans

The Key to Lead - Brasswork
In the 2022 “State of the Global Workplace” Gallup reports that only 21% of employees are engaged at work and only 33% of employees are thriving in their overall wellbeing. Most employees would say that they don't find their work meaningful, they don't think their lives are going well or they don't feel hopeful about their future. Global workers report mantras such as: "Living for the weekend," "watching the clock tick," "work is just a paycheck." We can assume that these attitudes also spill over impacting our communities, and our home-life. So, what are the 21% of companies doing right that the other 79% of companies are not doing? If we are a leader or business owner, how can we create an environment that is an affirming, validating, empowering place to be? How can we be self-affirming, self-validating, and self-empowering when we find ourselves in an environment that is not supporting those things? How can we be a “positive node” in our workplace, in our community, and at home? Join me to uncover proven strategies that you can use right now be the bright light in your ecosystem that serves to light others up.

Collaborating On Novel Post-Acute Pathways: A Value-Based Performance Improvement Initiative
In order to excel at value based care, Orthopedic groups must implement new pathways and innovations to optimize TJR bundles. It is well known that the coordination of post acute care can drive cost savings, primarily when shifting away from the overutilization of home health. Do these innovations reduce costs, maintain quality, and improve patient satisfaction? What is required to make performance improvement successful? This presentation will walk through the implementation of a novel outpatient PT at Home platform when adopted by one of the largest Orthopedic specialty centers in the country. We’ll present the keys to successful adoption, in addition to real world cost-analysis and outcomes.

Creating an Effective Orthopedic Compliance Program Through a Gap Analysis
Health care is in a hyper-state of investigations and overzealous prosecutions regardless of size or location of the practice, thus creating a culture of compliance is the only way to mitigate risk! The only path to creating an effective compliance program is through the performance of a "Gap Analysis" to identify vulnerabilities in the operations of the practice and close the "gaps". The session will be taught by one of the industry's most recognized and revered regulatory compliance and health law experts. Don't miss this opportunity to get the facts and set your practice on the road to total compliance.

Leadership in Orthopedic Practice
Leadership requires 4 core elements to be successful but more importantly an innate ability to recognize the problems of today and a well-grounded imagination for the future. Managing to a KPI or metric is not what makes one successful, it takes a whole lot more! Consumerism in Healthcare: How Can it Benefit My Practice?
“Consumerism” is a hot topic in healthcare with patients seeking a more patient-friendly experience when seeing the doctor. Digital tools for patient engagement, appointments, telehealth, and pricing transparency are the cornerstones. Given the rising costs of health insurance, and increased patient responsibility for payment, it’s no surprise pricing transparency ranks at the top of the list of patient demands. Coupled with new requirements for Good Faith Estimates, managers must navigate the path to transparency and adopt payment models suited to today’s health consumer.
Unfortunately, most practices are anything but consumer friendly. Many clinics make it impossible for patients to get a timely appointment and often turn away direct pay patients. By “closing the door”, we have literally opened another door to competitors. With 1,000’s of locations major retailers are offering primary care alternatives. New technologies for virtual visits have replaced office visits. These retail and digital practices “own the patient” and have the power to make specialist referrals. Patients are being siphoned away to these companies where the doctor patient relationship is being supplanted by virtual care. How do we retain these patients and partner with these new healthcare entities to our benefit? This session will explore this changing healthcare landscape to help implement strategies that can position your practice to succeed and become the destination for retail and digital referrals. Digital tools for patient engagement, appointments, and pricing transparency will be discussed. Learn actionable strategies and best practices to pave the way to implement consumerism in your practice. Speaker(s): Michael Havig, MD, OrthoCollier

Maximize the Value of Benchmarking Results Through Participation
In order to fully utilize operational benchmarks for orthopedics, including revenue, expenses, compensation, overhead, productivity, and accounts receivable, you have to have an understanding of your practice’s data and performance in these key areas. The process of completing the benchmarking survey provides you with this understanding as you work to pull reports and analyze the data needed to finalize your submission. Once the benchmarking results are published, the ability to directly compare your practice’s performance to that of other orthopedic practices gives you the ability to put the results into action. This panel of orthopedic practice professionals and physicians will discuss how they have used benchmarking data within their practices to inform decisions and improve their performance

Value-Based Approach to MIPS: Improving Your MIPS Score
The Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) score determines future Medicare payment adjustments (both bonuses and penalties) for your practice. Available measures, scoring criteria, and measure rules are complex and ever-evolving. Orthopedic practices have raised concerns that limitations of specialty-specific MIPS measures makes the program burdensome for doctors and discourages practices from even attempting to improve their scores and avoid a penalty. To combat the high cost of training and implementation of the ever-changing rules of MIPS, learn how one practice has selected measures based on benchmark scores and automated them to be the most efficient and cost effective way to avoid the up to 9% of negative adjustments for noncompliance.

Is Your Practice Paying Too Much To Acquire Patients?
An ever-increasing percentage of patients are being added to practices via marketing activities. As a practice leader, it feels overwhelming to sort through the mix of software and services companies that claim to have indispensable offerings your practices need to power growth. This presentation will share the processes, tools, and examples from multiple mid-sized orthopedic practices that have been used to grow revenue and profitability via marketing. Their use of social media, highly targeted ads, predictive analytics, and detailed tracking down of individual patients—including the revenue generated from those patients—will be highlighted and shared. Additionally, this session will share regionalized benchmarking data on patient acquisition costs. This regionalized data will enable each attendee to assess their status vs. these benchmarks but patients by surgery type. This presentation will be co-presented with Michael Pendleton, the CEO of Desert Orthopaedic Clinic in Las Vegas, Nevada. If your practice has a great internal marketing team and a strong and effective marketing agency partner, that’s a great start. However, the principles and solutions shared in this presentation apply to any practice that spends marketing dollars and wants to understand the value and effectiveness of that investment truly.

Ortho Coding: What We Know & What We Don't Know
Most specialties are only focused on the E&M changes, but the average ortho practice has much more to EACH year to be current with by way of coding/billing revisions and updates. Making sure you are up-to-date will be a focus of this training, but then we will turn our focus to some of the coding and billing regulations that can make even the seasoned ortho executive frustrated, such as skilled care patient visits in the office setting, fracture care patients from the ED, closed fracture care vs. office visit copays, and much more.

Patients Second, Employees First: Build and Attract a Winning Team
The Covid-19 Pandemic has unleashed staffing challenges not seen since WWI and WWII. Employee risk, shortages, burnout, and stress were at an all-time high. Currently, in 2022/2023 we are still facing the aftermath of these pandemic challenges. At the forefront of this, for us as Administrators, is staffing challenges. Elsevier Health, in their recent Clinician of the Future” report, found that 31% of clinicians and 47% of U.S healthcare workers will leave their job by 2025. With staggering numbers supporting that a large percentage of those individuals are contemplating leaving healthcare entirely. The overwhelming response is that these staffing realities would cripple most private practices, hospital departments, and ambulatory surgery centers. The blowback would be catastrophic for patient care and ultimately the patient experience.
In an era where upcoming generations are making decisions based on that experience, healthcare has become a competitive business. "Patients first" has been the model for far too long without the heavy realization that in fact, the individuals that should come first, are the healthcare workers. Without that key component, all else fails. Patient care dwindles and the load falls on the individuals who choose to remain within the field creating, as we've seen, an unsustainable environment. In this presentation, Nicola will deep dive into the following key drivers to ensure your recruitment and retention success. - The key differences to the pre and post covid employee needs. - How to better engage and retain staff. - Why early and ongoing recruitment is vital. The Patient Acquisition Evolution: From Jurassic to Fantastic
With today’s rapid shift in the patient pathway to obtaining healthcare, it feels like eons since people went to their primary care physicians for referral to a specialist. The reality is that online resources are swiftly impacting the way patients seek out and select providers. With the internet prompting a rapid evolution in patient acquisition from word of mouth to the digital scene, the search for providers has become reminiscent of online shopping. During this session, we’ll cover where orthopedic practices tend to fall short as patient expectations shift, and the digital patient acquisition strategies available to address these shortcomings. With a winning marketing strategy, practices can adapt to healthcare’s changing digital landscape and evolve alongside healthcare consumerism to drive patient acquisition going forward.

Adding Occupational Medicine to the Partnership Track
Deciding to add a new line of service is always an exciting and daunting endeavor. The decision to proceed requires research, development of a business plan, a proforma analysis, and detailed understanding of your local market. Then, once the decision to expand is made, getting all of the necessary resources, including people, technology, contracts, and workflows, in place requires dedicated, focused time by practice leaders and staff. This session will provide a case study of an orthopedic practice that has recently added an Occupational Medicine physician to their partnership track. The presenter will share lessons learned, unexpected obstacles, and the pros and cons of adding the Occupational Medicine service line, as well as recommendations for practices considering adding this or other service lines to their practice.

Leveraging Meta-Skills For Improved Outcomes
Clinicians report the importance of soft skills and evidence is mounting that soft skills contribute significantly toward improving organizational outcomes, professional joy, and influence. But exactly how do we develop soft skills? The answer is – meta-skills! Meta-skills have been shown to be foundational to the effective use of soft skills and enhanced technical ability. This session will engage participants around the practical implications of meta-skills and provide actionable recommendations for how to leverage them in the workplace. The research is clear: all other things being equal, meta-skills unlevel the playing field and give an advantage to individuals who develop them. Are Business Services Organizations (BSOs) in Your Future?
Management Services Organizations (MSOs) and Business Services Organizations (BSOs) are among the most popular entities to address a myriad of strategies for healthcare providers. Orthopedic entities are a perfect fit for such as well. This session will outline traditional MSO structures, services, and business plans to provide a foundation for the more complex BSO structures. MSOs and BSOs have become the hottest platforms for hospital-physician alignment, private equity (PE) constructs, and other relevant affiliation initiatives. They also include an overall strategy for clinical integration and managed care/payer contracting. Thus, we will dissect MSOs from their beginning to today and present their value proposition. We will provide the audience with valuable insights into applying these entities to the various orthopedic providers’ growth and expansion plans. Along the way, we will consider how they will affect payer contracting and reimbursement strategies, including value-based reimbursement.

Can/Will Your Team Get Any Work Done from Home?
How can we adjust our historical thinking from managing people to managing workflow, to ensure that a work from home program has a chance for success. What roles can be performed in a work from home setting? What considerations must we make before shifting employees home, permanently? How do you stay connected and communicate effectively? Why would I even consider such madness? In this ever changing world of employee's taking control of their own work life, work from home positions could be a practice saver. Walk with me through the thought process, planning, implementation, and review of my decision to push approximately 30% of my workforce out of the office, and into their homes - including the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Fierce Feedback and Tough Love
Out of respect for our most valuable resource, no employee should be surprised when they are terminated for a long-term issue or behavior. A supervisor has a duty to employees and the organization to communicate about problematic topics before they morph into bigger problems or cause others to leave. Have you ever felt dread or uneasiness about a "confrontation" you need to have with an employee? What if you could reframe the confrontation as respectful feedback? If you want to be more at ease planning and conducting all kinds of conversations with employees, or if you are challenged by mediating disagreements between coworkers, this is your chance to increase your success. Develop a plan to address employee behaviors, while building the relationship and retaining the employee. This session will include example stories, humor, exercises, and a handout with suggested reading material, videos, and tips. You will leave knowing how to successfully follow up conversation to ensure the changes “stick”. Hear from a seasoned people manager with over 25 years’ experience about navigating these conversations and knowing afterwards you have done what is best for all parties involved.

Embracing a Better RCM Model—and Bottom Line—with Effective Intelligence
Operational margin has moved center stage in terms of priorities for today’s orthopedic practices. Future success hinges on the ability to maximize revenue capture amid severe billing staff shortages and increased patient financial responsibility. Consequently, revenue cycle models must become more “effective” in terms of workflow and oversight. Yet, embracing RCM models built on effective intelligence requires access to deeper insights than EHRs and practice management systems can provide. To overcome this challenge, Washington-based Rebound Orthopedics—the 75-provider group that services the Portland Trail Blazers and Portland Winterhawks—deployed an infrastructure that brings together data from multiple sources to help existing staff execute tasks more effectively. Today the practice is reaping the benefits of having real-time visibility into the effectiveness and bottom-line impact of each revenue cycle team member. This presentation will explore how Rebound Orthopedics laid the needed foundation for realizing better bottom-line performance with fewer FTEs.

How to Create a Successful Worker’s Compensation Line of Business
Looking to expand revenue opportunities, lines of business and referral sources within your practice? Consider assessing and accepting patients or payers that are limited with their options for care, such as worker’s compensation. The most commonly reported work-related injuries are Sprains and Strains, covering 49% of the overall annual totals. Patients with work-related Injuries are constantly running into the issue that they are unable to locate a provider who will accept Worker’s Compensation Insurance. Better understanding the reimbursement opportunities, along with the requisite infrastructure required to manage this line of business, can lead to a successful business model for any practice.

Implement a Direct-Pay Strategy: Grow Revenue and Attract Patients/Payers
Your practice needs to develop a comprehensive strategy to accommodate the growing numbers of elective, direct-pay patients, efficiently collect their payments, and simplify the process for your staff. These patients include employees of self-insured companies, as well as those who are out-of-network, underinsured, members of sharing ministries, gig economy workers, medical tourists, HSA, and HDHP patients. These patients make up nearly one third of the total healthcare spend but have difficulty accessing specialty care as more than 95% of orthopedic practices turn away direct payers due to lack of a coherent, reproducible process. Additionally, with new Federal mandates for Good Faith Estimates, practice leaders must act with urgency to create pricing transparency solutions. The way to succeed is to create a digital retail strategy with simple access, transparent pricing, shoppable menus, secure digital payments, and automated GFEs. This session will demonstrate the value of offering transparently priced bundled care plans, how to create and price them, and how to use online strategies to drive revenue, generate GFEs, and streamline direct-pay for your patients, physicians, and staff.

Booster Seat in the Board Room- Part of IGNITE General Session
This is a session I have been working on for a few years. There are certain traits we ascribe to leaders, and even in 2022, physical presence is one of those historical biases that carries forward. Americans chose the taller candidate to be president in 22 of the last 25 elections, all of whom were taller than 6 feet. Sir Isaac Newton stated that innovation comes from "standing on the shoulders of giants. And the great Randy Newman even went so far as to state that people like me lack reason to LIVE!. I am here to give all of our vertically challenged leaders assurance that you can still thrive and stand tall in a crowd, even if your feet don't touch the ground when sitting on the barstool!

Hidden Treasures 2- Part of IGNITE General Session
While some buried treasures have been found, there are still others waiting to be discovered. Have we overlooked the treasures in others? Together we took a journey of transformative discovery by accepting a 30-day self-love challenge, mastered the power of letting go, built strong friendships by networking, and empowered others to "Be their best U!". We will continue to assess the value of not being weighted by fear, doubt and insecurities; but free to shine brightly with self-confidence, authenticity and optimism. Pull out your treasure maps and be ready to explore. Let’s go!

Leveraging Patient Satisfaction and Outcomes Data in Orthopedic Practices
Patient satisfaction. Patient Reported Outcomes. Benchmarking. Data Analytics. The demand for data, from physicians, patients, insurers, and the government continues to increase. The ability to capture that data and compare individual practice and provider results to national orthopedic benchmarks is essential for practices seeking to remain independent and for hospital and university practices working to meet and exceed regulatory requirements. In this session, we will assess the multiple pathways for collecting data in AAOE Empower, including sending surveys directly to patients, transferring data collected by other survey providers, and automating the survey delivery process. An examination of the powerful insights that can be achieved by looking across satisfaction, outcome, and operational metrics will also be conducted.

Looking Beyond Operational Data: Connecting Satisfaction and Outcome
Developing a single repository of operational, satisfaction and outcomes data provides AAOE with a unique opportunity to examine new performance metrics for orthopaedic practices. The purpose of this session is to identify these metrics and discuss how to use data available from the AAOE Benchmarking Results and AAOE Empower to improve quality of care. Presenters will share ideas on how available data can be effectively integrated and will solicit feedback from attendees on the metrics developed.
