Experiences in Building Ownership
Medical groups often have one or more real estate entities that own the medical office(s) where they practice. Further, medical groups may also own partial or entire ownership of medical office buildings that are not related to the group’s practice location. Attendees will learn about choice of entity selection, key legal/contractual issues in real estate partnerships (governance, buy-sell triggers, capital calls, admission of new owners, etc.), and how to put together a team that will help the practice get the building project to the finish line. In the recent past, these medical groups have often benefited financially from this ownership through cash flow return on investment and underlying asset appreciation. REITs or similar organizations have expressed great interest in medical office buildings and are actively seeking purchase of these assets. It is important for the medical group to understand the advantages of owning the real estate assets and how to evaluate approaches by entities that are wanting to purchase these assets. This course will generally advise medical groups on the advantages of real estate ownership, partner buy in/buy out, relationship of the medical group partners and the real estate partners and evaluation of offers by third parties.

Prior authorizations are a major bottleneck for orthopedic surgeries and musculoskeletal advanced imaging, and unexpected claim denials can lead to serious financial consequences. This presentation will highlight real world case studies from an orthopedic practice and orthopedic hospital (Longwood Orthopedic Associates and New England Baptist Hospital), and share insight in the workflow and technology improvements they made to dramatically improve patient throughput by 80%, reduce prior authorization FTE by 23-59%, and cut net write-offs by 33% on average for Orthopedic Surgery, Radiology, Pain, and Physical Therapy service lines.

The title of this talk was advice given to me on the stage at the Miss America Pageant and it is advice that directs me to this day. This talk is designed to help any group find the strength and determination to succeed on their own terms, turning any failure into opportunity, and to stop looking from side to side along the way. Powerful examples from my life experiences demonstrate how circumstances play only a small role in our potential.
